"" I had a wonderful two week trip to Iraq by Midasia Routes. Everything was expertly planned, we saw all of the historically significant sights with skilled tour guides, and we always felt safe. We learned so much about the history of civilization and Mesopotamia, as well as the modern day challenges of the country. We enjoyed the kindness and warmth of the Iraqi people, and had a very local experience. The agenda was customizable and flexible too. I recommend them without hesitation. ""

Day By Day Experience

  • Day 1: Arrival in Baghdad - VIP Welcome to Mesopotamia

As your flight descends into Baghdad, a country cloaked in history and humanity begins to unfold beneath you. Upon arrival, you are welcomed by our professional team with VIP Meet & Greet service right at the gate. Immigration and customs formalities are swiftly managed through our fast-track channels while your luggage is discreetly handled. You’re then escorted to your private, comfortable vehicle, where chilled drinks and dates await.

Settle into your hand-picked luxury hotel, where your room reflects the modern comforts of Iraq and the echoes of its ancient soul. If time allows, we ease into the rhythm of the city with a gentle walk along Abu Nuwas Street beside the Tigris River. As the sun dips behind Baghdad's skyline, we enjoy a quiet dinner infused with the flavors of saffron, cinnamon, and chargrilled meats—an early taste of the journey to come.

    Meals: Dinner

  • Day 2: The Glory of Baghdad - History, Culture & Resilience

This morning begins with an exclusive guided visit to the Iraqi National Museum, home to some of the most priceless artifacts of Mesopotamian civilization. Here, Sumerian tablets, Assyrian reliefs, and Babylonian statues come to life with expert interpretation.

Later, wander through Al-Mutanabbi Street, the intellectual heartbeat of Baghdad. Meet local poets and historians, browse antique booksellers, and sip strong black tea at historic cafés. Enjoy a curated visit to Al-Qishla Clock Tower and the Ottoman barracks nearby.

Lunch is in a restored traditional home in Old Baghdad, offering a quiet retreat from the bustling streets. In the afternoon, we cross the river to visit Al-Kadhimiya Shrine, a significant site for Shia pilgrims, shimmering in gold and rich in spiritual energy. We return to your hotel for a relaxed evening.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 3: Samarra - Spirals of Faith & Power

Today we travel north along the Tigris to the sacred and historical city of Samarra. An armed escort ensures a safe and seamless journey. Samarra, once the capital of the Abbasid Caliphate, offers a stunning view into the Islamic golden age.

We visit the Great Mosque of Samarra, renowned for its massive spiral minaret—Malwiya—rising like a sandstorm frozen in time. A climb to the top (optional) rewards with panoramic views over the Euphrates plain.

We explore the ruins of Al-Mustansiriya School and other relics of the Abbasid dynasty before enjoying a riverside lunch with locals. The journey back to Baghdad offers time for reflection as sunset casts an orange glow over the fertile plains. Return to your hotel in time for a leisurely dinner.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 4: Karbala - City of Eternal Light

After breakfast, we begin our sacred journey south to Karbala, one of the holiest cities in the Islamic world. Upon arrival, check in to a centrally located hotel with views overlooking the shrine.

The spiritual core of Karbala lies in the Imam Hussein Shrine, resplendent in gold and flowing with pilgrims. Our guided visit is respectfully timed between prayer hours to avoid crowding. The shrine of Abbas ibn Ali is equally captivating, its mirrored halls reflecting the devotion of millions.

We experience the Bazaar of Karbala, teeming with prayer beads, rosewater, and silks. Taste freshly baked samoon bread and sip on warm cinnamon tea, just like locals. At night, witness the serenity of the shrines illuminated in celestial light—a deeply moving moment regardless of faith.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 5: Najaf - The Wisdom of Ages

A short drive brings us to Najaf, where history, scholarship, and spiritual gravitas converge. After check-in, we visit the Imam Ali Shrine, considered the third holiest site in Shia Islam. Pilgrims from across the world fill the courtyard with prayers that echo across generations.

Nearby lies Wadi Al-Salam, the largest cemetery in the world, with over 6 million graves. Here, your local historian shares tales of martyrs, scholars, and the deep cultural connection Iraqis have with their ancestors.

Enjoy a home-hosted meal in Najaf’s old quarter, where locals share insights into daily life, followed by a visit to a seminary and bookshop. Return to your hotel for a quiet evening.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 6: Ancient Babylon & Hillah - Where Kings Once Walked

Today, we travel to Hillah to explore the mythic ruins of Babylon, once ruled by Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar. Stand before the reconstructed Ishtar Gate, and walk the famed Processional Way—once the stage of royal parades and empire-wide ceremonies.

Our local archaeologist brings Babylon to life with rich storytelling about the Hanging Gardens, ancient law codes, and battles with Assyria. We also visit Saddam Hussein’s ruined palace built atop a Babylonian ruin—an unsettling but necessary reflection on modern history.

Lunch is a rustic Babylonian-style meal under the palms. Return to Najaf by late afternoon for rest or an optional visit to a local craft workshop.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 7: Diwaniya & Nippur - The Cradle of Writing

We head southeast into Diwaniya, stopping to explore Nippur, an ancient Sumerian city that was once the religious heart of Mesopotamia. Little visited yet immensely significant, this site offers a rare glimpse into early cuneiform tablets and the earliest concepts of law and spirituality.

Continue through countryside scattered with water buffalo and date groves. Enjoy a picnic lunch under a reed canopy. Reach Nasiriyah by evening and check into a locally styled hotel or guesthouse near the Euphrates River.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 8: The Mesopotamian Marshes - Eden Reborn

A full day is dedicated to the majestic Marshes of Southern Iraq, a UNESCO-listed biosphere. Travel by boat through winding reed canals, past water buffalo, dragonflies, and mudhif guesthouses built by the Ma'dan (Marsh Arabs).

A lunch of freshly caught fish, rice, and marsh herbs is served by a welcoming local family. Your guide shares stories of Saddam’s devastation of the marshes—and the resilient revival of this ancient ecosystem. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of kingfishers, ibis, and rare herons.

Return to Nasiriyah or continue south to Qurna—the mythic meeting point of the Tigris and Euphrates—before arriving in Basra by evening. Overnight in a modern riverside hotel.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 9: Basra - Port City of Poets and Pearls

Basra, once a Venetian-style port city, still sings its song of faded grandeur and new beginnings. Today we stroll through the Ashar Canal, visit Al Basra Grand Mosque, and explore the Old Ottoman Quarter. Literature lovers will enjoy learning about Basra’s role in the works of Sinbad and other Arab legends.

Lunch is at a floating restaurant featuring Basrawi seafood delicacies, particularly the river fish grilled with tamarind and herbs. In the afternoon, visit the Basra Museum, housed in Saddam’s former lakeside palace. It holds an impressive collection from Babylon, Sumer, and the Islamic golden age.

End the day with a quiet evening on a traditional shanaashil (wooden balcony) boat ride, floating on the Shatt al-Arab waterway.

    Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

  • Day 10: Farewell from Basra - Departure Assistance

Your journey ends where the rivers kiss the Gulf. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast before being transferred to Basra International Airport. Our VIP departure team ensures you breeze through formalities with assistance from check-in to immigration.

As you fly out, Iraq is no longer a place you imagined from history books—it is a country of poetry, warmth, and awe-inspiring depth, now etched into your heart.
